Meet Crys Matthews

Crys Matthews is one of fourteen acts to appear at the 2022 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Thursday Night Music Stage.

Crys Matthews is one of the most exciting songwriters to hit the music scene in some time. The songs that Crys writes and delivers to us are powerful tools to remind us all that change is possible and that we are not invisible. Her song “Changemakers” was named the International Folk Music Award song of 2022. Crys is not afraid to back down and her honest evaluations of the state of the union and about the need for more love, compassion and respect are being heard. Reminscent of the protest songs of the 1960s and 70s, the songs take a dynamic and inspirational stance — a call to action that cannot be ignored.

Crys has been hailed as the “next Woody Guthrie” and that comparison is a valid one. Given the world as it is right now, it may be fair to stretch the analogy even more. Crys tackles a long list of social ills and defiantly and confidently zeroes in on the root causes and lights fires to inspire her listeners and give hope to all. She’s played at festivals, clubs, and coffeehouses all over the country and has galvanized an energy and clear vision that hasn’t been heard in years. As her bio states, she is a former drum major from North Carolina as well as a classicall-trained clarinetist but became a folk singer to raie her voice to to respond to Dr. Martin Luther King’s call to be a “drum major for justice.” Personally I can’t think of a better musician to march behind than the inimitable Crys Matthews.
